Sajan Bernese started after I saw a postage-sized color photo and brief description in a library book. The beauty of this breed was evident in that small photo. From there I met an adult at a dog show and I've never looked back. My first Berner, Jeni, came home in August The Great Bernese gets its name from its parent breeds: the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Great Pyrenees – both of which have long and interesting histories. The Great Pyrenees is closely related to the Kuvasz and is thought to have been in Europe as long ago as the Bronze Age.

By the early s, those efforts had paid off, and in , the Swiss Kennel Club recognized the Bernese Mountain Dog as a breed. Shortly after World War I, the first Bernese Mountain Dogs were exported to the United States and the AKC officially recognized the Bernese in The Bernese Mountain Dog Club conducted a health survey that included dogs. They report that the average age of death was years for unneutered Bernese Mountain Dogs, and years for neutered Berners. These are shockingly young ages to die. Looking specifically at Bernese Mountain Dogs who had died, only 18 of them died of "old age".

Bernese Mountain Dogs - Summing Up The Bernese Mountain Dog is a rare breed indeed, full of beauty and love. I've personally enjoyed watching a Bernese dog cart parade, and there's nothing as joyful as ribbon festooned dogs who are smiling and simply happy to be around people. The Bernese Mountain dog originated in the Swiss mountains. Many 18th century paintings show dogs that look like a Bernese type dog. The breed was named for the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. They were working dogs particularly good at draft work, pulling carts to cateringwhidbey.com of: Dog.
